Summary & Background

Fulton County was created in 1853, by the Georgia General Assembly, and is the most populous County governmental jurisdiction in the State of Georgia. The County provides a range of services to more than 920,000 residents, employs a workforce of approximately 5557 employees, and operates on an annual budget that exceeds $900 million. The County is governed by a seven (7) member Board of Commissioners, five (5) elected by geographic district and two (2) elected county-wide, including the Chairman. Members are part-time and serve concurrent four (4) year terms. Due to redistricting, as of January 1, 2015, the Board of Commissioners shall consist of six (6) elected by geographic district and one (1) elected county-wide who shall serve the Chairman. Responsibilities of the Board of Commissioners include: establishing policies for the health and welfare of County residents, adopting an annual budget for County government operations, authorizing bond referenda, and enacting plans for County growth and development. The County government is administered by a County Manager, who is appointed by the Board of Commissioners.
