Summary & Background

The Department of Senior Services recommends approval of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Center for Visually Impaired.  The Memorandum of Understanding allows the Department to include seniors with disabilities in receiving transportation to get to their medical appointments. The Department covers registration fees and trip charges. The Center for the Visually Impaired will provide referrals for seniors with disabilities to register with the program and receive transportation support.

Scope of Work: The Senior Alternative Transportation program will support this MOU and provides three (3) primary services to enhance existing transportation options for low-income seniors and seniors with disabilities: (1) training on the use of Transportation Network Companies (TNC’s), (2) service registration and ride booking assistance, and (3) supplementation of the cost of TNC rider fares and service registration fees. Fulton County Department of Senior Services was previously awarded funds from the Federal Transportation Administration - Human Services Coordination Research Program to enhance the Senior Alternative Transportation program operating expenses, which was used to establish a partnership with the Center for Visually Impaired. This MOU will continue the partnership and support transportation for seniors with disabilities.

Community Impact: Senior transportation services help to improve quality of life, foster independence, and enhance overall well-being for Fulton County seniors, their caregivers, and the community served.

Department Recommendation: The Department of Senior Services recommends approval.

Project Implications: The project allows the Department of Senior Services to offer Uber/Lyft services to seniors aged 60 and above with disabilities to transport them to and from their medical appointments.

Community Issues/Concerns: If the MOU is not approved, eligible seniors aged 60 and above with disabilities will not have access to County-based senior transportation services

Department Issues/Concerns: There are no department issues or concerns.
