Summary & Background: Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is the main component of tertiary treatment used at the Camp Creek Water Reclamation Facility. The purpose of this stage of treatment is to kill any remaining viruses in the treated wastewater effluent before its release into Camp Creek and the Chattahoochee River. Having a properly functioning UV system is vital to the facility’s operation and is a requirement of existing state permits and federal guidelines. The current UV System has reached the end of its useful design life and is no longer cost effective to operate.
Scope of Work: This project involves the replacement of the existing UV System at the Camp Creek WRF as well as providing upgrades to the channels, flow control, electrical, and instrumentation systems. In addition, several site improvements will be limited to the existing UV System site. Installation of the new system will be staggered in a manner to keep the plant online and its effluent within the specified permitted range during construction. The electrical components will be housed in a new building to protect them from adverse weather conditions.
Community Impact: The Camp Creek WRF is the largest treatment facility located in South Fulton County. It serves the majority of the publically sewered areas of each city within South Fulton, including a portion of Atlanta. Proper operation of the facility is necessary to preserve the health and safety of the public/environment it serves. This facility is also vital in supporting the continued economic activity/development of the South Fulton area.
Department Recommendation: The Department of Public Works recommends approval of this item.
Project Implications: The Camp Creek Water Reclamation Facility will not be able to meet permit requirements should the current UV system fail.
Community Issues/Concerns: No community concerns or issues have been noted.
Department Issues/Concerns: The Department of Public Works has no issues/concerns with the work being done by the apparent low-bidder to install the new UV system.
