Summary & Background
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), formerly known as Sensory Integration Dysfunction, is a condition in which multisensory input is not adequately processed in order to provide appropriate responses to the demands of the environment. Sensory needs refer to the specific types and amounts of sensory input a person’s nervous system requires to feel comfortable, focused, and regulated, across eight sensory systems such as touch, sound, movement, and body awareness.
KultureCity provides certification for venues, organizations, and small businesses who want to learn more about sensory needs and how to better engage with individuals with sensory challenges. Mobile Sensory Stations (M.S.S) is a product designed to bring a mobile sensory experience to a workplace that lacks sensory spaces.
Fulton County understands that there are a wide range of individuals who patronize the library system including those with sensory needs. The Kirkwood library will be a pilot location to receive sensory equipment and training to assist patrons with sensory needs including but not limited to those with autism, PTSD, adults with Dementia, Parkinson’s disease and stroke patients.
Scope of Work: KultureCity, Inc. (”KultureCity”) is a nonprofit organization whose sensory inclusive mission is to create sensory inclusive spaces that provide universal accessibility for any person with sensory issues, including individuals with autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, Parkinson’s, obsessive compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and others; KultureCity and Fulton County has entered into an inclusive certification agreement. With this agreement, KultureCity will provide Sensory Inclusive™ certification, sensory bags, staff training, custom signage, a social story, support for sensory rooms or stations, and integration with the KultureCity Koji app to be provided at the Kirkwood Library. The Friends of the Library in Kirkwood will purchase the mobile sensory equipment and the Fulton County Library System will pay for staff training.
Community Impact: The Fulton County Library System will have one of the first county facilities to provide sensory equipment for county patrons.
Department Recommendation: The library system recommends approval of this action.
Project Implications: If this action is not approved, the library system will have to wait to provide sensory needs for the Fulton County Library System.
