Summary & Background

Superior Court Administration recommends the contract renewal with Grady Healthcare System, for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). The goal of accountability courts is to restore participants to productive, working, tax-paying citizens who provide for their families, thereby reducing costs to social services and the penal system. The utilization of medication assisted treatment for those participants who are medically appropriate, demonstrate medical necessity, and who are willing to comply with program guidelines will help to achieve that goal. This contract will expand and enhance the capacity to treat clients with opioid addiction. This request is primarily funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance through the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.

Scope of Work:  Opioid addicted individuals require one of three medications commonly used to treat severe addiction: Methadone, Naltrexone, and Buprenorphine. These treatments can only be dispensed through accredited programs and/or credentialed medical professionals.  The target population for MAT are those eligible accountability court participants who have a diagnosed addiction to alcohol and/or opioids and who have not responded to traditional counseling. The use of medication is intended as an additional component to help ensure sobriety.

Community Impact: : Improves public safety in the community by ensuring clients with opioid addiction can continue to be treated and successfully complete Accountably Court/ Drug Court programs.

Department Recommendation: Superior Court Administration recommends approval of this renewal.
